It, and The Last of the Innocent arc from the OG Criminal run, are probably Brubaker's most intelligent writing to date (not that his writing isn't typically smart, just that there's a good bit of meat to chew on in those stories in how they engage with their genres on a meta-textual level). It also is unique in that it is a commentary on the tropes of noir, exploring the idea of the Femme Fatale through a particularly inspired melding of those genres. You could probably say the same about the Wrong Place Wrong Time stories, too, but the unique comic-zine aesthetic of their original release goes a long way to making them feel special.įatale: This is a great mix of noir and Lovecraftian horror. The latter two there are fun little in-universe stories, but definitely the weakest Criminal material Brubaker has done. I would rank the material here as follows: Cruel Summer (obviously), Wrong Place Wrong Time (best to be read with the oversized, comic-zine editions, not the TPB), My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies, and Bad Weekend.

My rankings for the arcs in this series: The Last of the Innocent, Lawless, Coward, The Sinners, The Dead and The Dying, and Bad Night.Ĭriminal (current run at Image): This one is largely bolstered by Cruel Summer, since it's the only major arc in the current series. It's the culmination of the story to a large degree. I think you've done yourself a bit of a disservice not reading these stories before Cruel Summer, as the seeds for Cruel Summer are planted all throughout the original series. I've read most of Brubaker's work, here's my rankings:Ĭriminal (the original Icon run from the mid-2000s): Just great crime stories all around.
